What is OpenVZ?

OpenVZ is an Operating System-level server virtualization solution, built on Linux. OpenVZ creates isolated, secure virtual environments — VEs (otherwise known as virtual private servers, or VPSs) on a single physical server enabling better server utilization and ensuring that applications do not conflict. Each VE performs and executes exactly like a stand-alone server; VEs can be rebooted independently and have root access, users, IP addresses, memory, processes, files, applications, system libraries and configuration files. See OpenVZ Wiki for more information.

The OpenVZ project is an open source community project supported by SWsoft and is intended to provide access to the code and ultimately for the open source community to test, develop and further the OS virtualization effort. It is also a proving ground for new technology that may evolve into the Virtuozzo™ product offering. We encourage the community to access, use, develop and comment on the software and references on this site.

OpenVz & HyperVM working together

The other open-source technology, is easy to manage, and ideal for creating light weight partitions that each customer can manage themselves. The limitation here is that openVZ virtualization is done at the OS level, and thus you can only partition linux into multiple linux boxes, and thus prevents you from running anything other than the host OS, that is in this case Linux. OpenVZ partitions are not completely isolated, and the entire ram + swap is shared across the vpses. This would mean that a graceful degradation of services cannot be achieved, but this is more than offset by the ease of adminstration, and the low overheads.

General Features:

  • Schedule Backups
  • Rebuild Vpses using a different template
  • Migrate Vpses trivially from one machine to another.
  • Command Center, which allows you to execute arbitrary commands in the vps and view the output
  • Integrated Java applet based Ssh client
  • Reset Root Password
  • File Manager

  • Client functions:
  • Manage reseller quotas: Control your client's ability to:
  • Change Banner
